Apple has not confirmed its September event date, although the iPhone 18 Pro Max is widely expected to launch during the month. Recent iPhones have consistently reached stores on a Friday roughly ten days after their announcement, which gives us two realistic release windows this year.

A20 Pro could deliver a major efficiency upgrade

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to use Apple’s A20 Pro chip manufactured using TSMC’s first-generation 2nm process, moving beyond the 3nm technology used for the A19 generation. Reports suggest the process can provide meaningful performance and power-efficiency improvements, with estimates reaching around 15% higher performance and 30% better efficiency under comparable conditions.

Apple is also expected to adopt TSMC’s WMCM packaging technology, which integrates memory more closely with the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. The design can reduce communication latency, improve efficiency, and potentially provide better performance for memory-heavy Apple Intelligence workloads.

Camera upgrades could be the main reason to upgrade

Camera hardware appears to be one of Apple’s biggest areas of focus for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, with several reports pointing toward a variable-aperture system for the 48MP Main camera.

Unlike the fixed aperture used on current iPhones, variable aperture hardware can physically control how much light reaches the camera sensor. Apple could use this system to improve exposure control, low-light photography, and depth of field while giving advanced users greater creative control over their photos.

Combined with the more efficient 2nm A20 Pro chip, this could make the iPhone 18 Pro Max Apple’s longest-lasting iPhone yet.

The display should remain around 6.9 inches, although Apple is expected to move to more efficient LTPO+ OLED technology. Reports also point toward a smaller Dynamic Island, although recent information suggests full under-display Face ID hardware is not ready for this generation.

C2 modem and satellite connectivity

Apple’s next C2 cellular modem is another expected upgrade. The chip should improve cellular efficiency and continue Apple’s move away from Qualcomm hardware, although some regions could still receive Qualcomm modems depending on mmWave support and regional requirements.

More interestingly, reports indicate that the C2 could support 5G through satellite networks using NR-NTN technology. Such support would expand Apple’s existing satellite capabilities beyond emergency-focused services, although the exact features available at launch remain unclear.
