Episode 7 quickly brings Jimmy’s secret arrangement with John Gotti into the open. One of Jimmy’s associates, Sean, gets arrested after an undercover officer catches him with cocaine at a strip club. His arrest creates an immediate problem because Sean knows enough about Jimmy and Gotti’s arrangement to cause serious damage.

Jimmy insists Sean will keep quiet, but Sweeney refuses to gamble the gang’s future on loyalty alone.

Keenan turns Sean’s arrest against the Westies

Glenn Keenan also becomes far more aggressive in Episode 7. After previously struggling inside the investigation, he starts using Sean’s arrest to pressure Sweeney and widen the split between him and Jimmy.

Keenan gets approval to search Gotti’s property and secretly plants a listening device. The FBI then records Sweeney discussing Sean with Gotti, including the danger that Sean poses if information about their drug operation reaches Paul Castellano.

Sweeney eventually agrees Sean has to die.

After Sweeney and Eddie kill Sean, Keenan plays the intercepted conversation for Jimmy. Jimmy immediately understands what happened and realizes Sweeney ordered the death of someone he had personally promised to protect.

Jimmy pulls a gun on Sweeney

The final confrontation changes the balance inside the gang.

Jimmy confronts Sweeney over Sean’s killing and accuses him of cowardice. Their argument becomes increasingly heated until Jimmy pulls a gun on Sweeney, leaving Season 1 heading into its finale with the Westies divided at the worst possible time.

Other problems are also closing in. Mickey Flanagan grows increasingly unstable as his relationship with Erin falls apart, while Bridget continues preparing to assassinate Markham. Brendan Cahill’s unexpectedly early release from prison also raises questions about whether he has become an informant.

Episode 7 therefore leaves several conflicts ready to collide in “The Irish Goodbye” on August 23.

What do you think Jimmy will do after pulling the gun on Sweeney, and who will survive the Season 1 finale? Let us know in the comments.
