Spoiler warning: This article discusses events through S04E01.

Jax Stewart was shot when Monica opened fire at her new office. Season 4 begins three weeks later with Jax in intensive care, medically sedated while doctors monitor swelling near her spine.

The premiere answers the survival question at the end: Jax wakes, is moved out of intensive care and quietly says Lewis’s name. Her recovery, however, is only beginning.

Jax is hospitalized after Monica’s shooting

Lewis stays close to the hospital while trying to care for the children. Doctors warn that Jax could recover or remain dependent on machines, forcing him to face decisions no spouse expects to make.

His fear becomes anger because Jax’s work has repeatedly placed danger near the family. A flashback to his support for her new firm makes the waiting harder, since the endangered future is one they planned together.

Corey protects the Stewart Firm

Krystal and Daniel try to stop Jax’s former firm from poaching clients. Their most important account belongs to Eric Cropper, a successful recording artist and executive who has trusted Jax for years.

Daniel calls Corey Cash back from Chicago to help. Eric refuses the rival firm’s pitch, but his loyalty immediately brings a complicated dispute involving his wife and business into the Stewart Firm’s fragile first days.

Jax wakes up, but the crisis is not over

Nurse Allie eventually asks Lewis to return without telling him why. He arrives expecting the worst and discovers Jax conscious in a new room, ending the episode on relief rather than another shock.

Waking up does not restore the old normal. Jax must recover physically while her family, Monica’s case, Eric’s problems and the firm’s survival all demand decisions she is not ready to make.

That distinction matters because a headline can flatten a complicated episode into one revelation. Here, the surrounding choices are as important as the answer itself. The story repeatedly shows people acting with partial information, then discovering that a decision made for protection, loyalty or survival has created a different risk for somebody else.

It also keeps the next chapter from feeling predetermined for everyone. The immediate event has a clear meaning, but it does not settle every motive or repair every damaged relationship. Any follow-up has to deal with what the characters now know, what they still misunderstand and whether they are prepared to change their behavior.

The episode’s strongest idea is that information changes relationships only when characters decide what to do with it. The facts answer the immediate question, but the consequences remain active beyond the final scene.
