The digital identity push across the United States continues to gain momentum this year. North Carolina just officially announced plans to launch a new mobile identification system for its residents soon. This upcoming system will eventually let people add their official state driver’s license directly into Apple Wallet, giving them a much easier way to carry important identification credentials right on their personal smartphones.

The state plans to launch mobile IDs later this year

North Carolina will roll out its own mobile ID application later this year. At first, residents can only store their digital driver’s license inside the official application provided by the state. The government expects to add support for the smartphone feature created by Apple sometime in early 2027.

To prepare for the big release, the state is asking people to join a feedback session. Residents can participate in a one hour meeting to share their thoughts on the early ideas for the digital service. The state will give a fifty dollar gift card to anyone who helps out with the research.

Once the platform goes live, North Carolina will join over a dozen other states that already support digital identification. People use these mobile credentials to speed up security checks at participating airports and verify their age at select businesses. While a physical license remains necessary for many situations, this upcoming digital option gives residents a very handy backup.
