Apple has explained why Spotlight indexing can take hours or even days after installing iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, or visionOS 27, which should help users understand the long post-update process.
Apple says Spotlight creates a local search index for files, apps, messages, photos, notes, settings, and other content stored on the device. Siri can also use this indexed data when responding to requests, while the index remains private and never gets shared with Apple or other devices.
The indexing process depends on how much data the device stores, although Apple says it finishes faster when the device stays unused, connected to power, and connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Users can see indexing progress through Spotlight on Mac or optimization notices in Settings on other devices. If search results remain incomplete, Apple recommends updating the software, checking Spotlight settings, or rebuilding part of the Spotlight index on Mac.
