macOS 27 May Restore the Familiar Pointing-Hand Cursor for Links

One small macOS 27 change is drawing attention from people who notice interface details. A user on Reddit says the cursor that appears over a link now looks like the familiar pointing hand again, rather than the flatter version used in recent macOS releases.

The change is not a major new feature, and Apple has not highlighted it in its macOS 27 release notes. Still, it is the sort of adjustment that people can notice hundreds of times a day while browsing the web, reading a document, or working through an app.

macOS 27 brings back a familiar link cursor

In a post shared in the MacOS community on Reddit, the user showed the pointing-hand cursor used when hovering over a link. The post describes it as a return to the earlier design, one that many longtime Mac users associate with the system.

Apple’s own macOS pointer guide calls this shape the “pointing hand.” It appears when the pointer is over a link to a web page, document, or another item. Apple also documents several other pointer states, including text selection, copying, and dragging.

The report does not establish that every Mac or app will show the same design. Cursor appearance can vary between Apple apps, third-party apps, browsers, and web content. It also does not confirm whether Apple changed the pointer system-wide or only in particular parts of macOS 27.

A small cue that makes links easier to spot

A pointing hand has a practical role. It tells the user that an item can be opened, often before they read the link text closely. That visual cue matters most in dense windows where buttons, text, and controls sit close together.

macOS has long used different pointer shapes to explain what an action will do. The hand signals a link, while the I-beam signals that text can be selected or edited. Restoring a more recognizable hand shape does not change how links work, but it can make that distinction easier to see at a glance.

Apple has not described the change

For now, this remains a user-reported macOS 27 interface detail rather than an announced feature. Apple’s release notes list many platform changes and known issues, but they do not identify a visual update to the link cursor.

Users who want to compare it on their own Mac can hover over links in Finder, Safari, and other apps after updating. Accessibility pointer settings are available in System Settings under Accessibility and Display, although those controls adjust pointer size and color rather than choosing the link-hand design.
