Apple CEO John Ternus has addressed whether the company plans to merge iPadOS and macOS into a single operating system, making it clear that Apple has no such plans for now. His comments come shortly after the company introduced its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, bringing the Mac closer to the iPad in terms of functionality.
During Apple’s November 2 earnings call, Arete Research analyst Richard Kramer asked whether features such as touch input, Dynamic Island, and Siri AI could eventually lead to a unified operating system that simplifies development and reduces costs.

“We don’t have any fundamentally different changes that we’re planning right now, nor would we talk about it anyway.”
Ternus also highlighted features such as Handoff, which allow users to move between iPhone, iPad, and Mac without interrupting their workflow.
His response suggests that Apple will continue improving interoperability while maintaining separate operating systems designed for different hardware and input methods.
Macs and iPads Are Becoming More Similar
Apple has already introduced Mac-like multitasking in iPadOS 26, including resizable windows and improved background task management. Meanwhile, the latest MacBook Pro adds an OLED touchscreen and Dynamic Island while retaining its keyboard-and-trackpad-focused interface.
Apple software chief Craig Federighi previously explained why the company prefers separate platforms, comparing a combined operating system to a poorly designed multipurpose utensil.
“It turns out it’s not a good spoon and it’s not a good fork.”
For now, Apple’s strategy remains consistent. Users can expect more shared features between macOS and iPadOS, although Ternus has given no indication that a unified operating system is coming.
