WhatsApp Rolls Out an In-Chat Search Shortcut on iPhone

WhatsApp adds Group Message History to help new members catch up

WhatsApp is rolling out a search shortcut in individual chats and channels on iPhone, according to feature tracker WABetaInfo. The shortcut places search closer to the conversation controls, so users can look for a message without first opening a separate menu.

The change is small, but it addresses a frequent task in long chats. Message search can be useful for finding an address, a date, a photo reference or a phrase someone sent weeks earlier. The new control does not change what WhatsApp indexes or make a conversation searchable outside the app.

How the rollout works

WABetaInfo says the feature is reaching users through the current iOS release, but availability can be phased. Updating WhatsApp from the App Store is the appropriate first step. If the shortcut is not visible afterward, there may be nothing else to enable: server-side rollouts can take time to reach every account.

Or get it by email
  • Open the relevant chat or channel.
  • Look for the new search shortcut in the conversation interface.
  • Enter a word or phrase to search within that conversation.

Existing WhatsApp search tools remain available if the new button has not arrived. The company’s support documentation covers search functions, but it has not published a broader announcement for this specific interface rollout. That is why the timing and availability should be treated as reported rather than guaranteed for every iPhone.

The shortcut is not a new archive or recovery tool. It searches material still available in the chat, so deleted messages, disappearing messages and content that was never downloaded may not appear in the results.
