Guy Gardner is the Green Lantern in Episode 6 because Hal Jordan’s fall removed him from service and John Stewart refused to keep the ring. The ten-year jump leaves Earth needing another active Lantern, and Guy is the person who occupies that role when John returns to Rushville in 2026.
The episode does not present Guy as the winner of a simple contest. His status is the result of two broken paths. Hal spent a decade in prison after the Rushville disaster, while John built a civilian life and tells officials that he was the Green Lantern for only five minutes.

John leaves the role behind
John’s brief description is revealing. He does not treat his experience as the beginning of a heroic career. He treats it as a closed chapter, even while using his knowledge of large-scale threats to sell protected underground stadiums through the company he runs with Marcus.
Guy enters the story with institutional backing that John lacks. He knows the official status of Hal’s ring, says it has been decommissioned and explains that it is locked at the Guardians’ headquarters on Oa. That access identifies him as the functioning link between Earth and the Green Lantern system.
Guy becomes the official Lantern
His first instinct is to avoid Hal’s murder because involvement would create bad optics. The line is played with humor, but it also shows the difference between Guy and John. Guy thinks about the office, its rules and its public image. John thinks about the unresolved harm and the person who has just died.
John persuades him to help in a more personal way. He asks for the ring so Hal can be buried in uniform, reminding Guy that everything he now has exists partly because John did not take it. Guy eventually delivers, which allows the funeral to honor Hal’s former role and gives John access to the ring later that night.
Hal’s ring complicates the succession
The result does not mean Guy took John’s specific ring or that every detail of the succession is settled. Episode 6 confirms the roles, not every administrative step that produced them. It also leaves open how Guy will respond when he learns John removed the ring from Hal’s grave.
