Director Hur Jin-ho’s newest historical thriller, ‘The Assassin(s)’, completely took over the South Korean box office during the recent Chuseok holiday weekend. The film features a popular cast including Lee Min-ho, Yoo Hae-jin, and Park Hae-il. By drawing in massive crowds, the movie easily claimed the top spot for four consecutive days after its release. Through the holiday, it recorded roughly 1.56 million total admissions.
The thriller secured four out of every ten theater tickets
The movie focuses on the failed 1974 assassination attempt on the president that resulted in the death of first lady Yuk Young-soo. It follows a group of brave journalists and detectives who put their careers on the line to uncover the hidden truth behind the tragic event. The Korean Film Council reported that the film took in 40.6 percent of all nationwide ticket revenue over the four-day holiday period.
Opening on the same day, the crime sequel ‘Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub’ finished in a distant second place with around 710,000 admissions. Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster ‘The Odyssey’ held onto third place as moviegoers continued to flock to IMAX screens for a larger viewing format.
