Malik gets that opportunity at the hospital where Monty, a gang leader tied to a textile business, is recovering. Monty’s son Andrea has gone there to kill him and seize control. Hondo tests the squad before choosing Malik
Hondo has not permanently assigned the Scout position when the team begins the case. The Scout must read a changing scene and direct colleagues in real time, so a poor decision can put officers as well as civilians in danger. Jude gets an early chance at the warehouse search, but a breakdown in communication nearly causes friendly fire.

Sammy’s turn comes when the team follows a suspicious shipment. Her plan is more organized, but armed attackers strike, leaving six people dead and Monty badly wounded. The operation confirms that the apparent weapons trade is more complicated than a simple raid. It also leaves Hondo unconvinced that he has found the right field leader.
The family feud changes the mission
Hondo begins to suspect that Monty’s son is connected to the attacks. Andrea is a lawyer who disagrees with his father’s choices, but his dispute is about power as well as principle. At the hospital, he disguises himself as medical staff and moves Monty into an isolated area. His father becomes the leverage in a bid to take over the gang.
Malik’s task is to manage that situation without letting an argument between relatives turn into another mass-casualty scene. He first tries to talk Andrea down. That matters because the Scout role is not simply a license to order force. It requires recognizing when negotiation can still protect the hostage and when the danger has become immediate.
Malik earns trust Hondo may later regret
When Andrea will not surrender and Monty’s life is at risk, Malik directs Jude to shoot. Monty survives, while Andrea does not. Hondo sees an officer who can change tactics under pressure and gives Malik the Scout position. The decision is understandable from the mission Hondo has just watched.
The complication is what Hondo cannot see. The premiere showed Malik in contact with someone outside the unit, raising questions about his loyalty. Episode 2 proves his operational ability but does not answer those questions. Putting him at the center of future missions therefore solves one leadership problem while potentially creating another.
