Spoilers for American Horror Story Season 13 Episode 4 follow. Constance Langdon is the returning character most visibly steering Ben through the new nightmare. Jessica Lange’s Murder House character stays close to him, helps explain what he has seen and works behind the ceremony at Club Hell. Episode 4 also reveals the limit of her control: she is serving Mr. Nas, not directing the supernatural plan alone.

That distinction changes the way Ben’s story reads. Constance may appear to be his guide, but her guidance is compromised. She has made a bargain that gives her a personal reason to bring Mr. Nas back to power, even if Ben cannot understand what is being done to him.

Constance is overseeing the ritual

The episode returns to Club Hell, where a ceremony presents women to Mr. Nas. Elsa Mars, another of Lange’s returning characters, presides over the stage show. Constance’s role is less theatrical but more consequential. She is connected to the arrangement that has brought these figures together and to the man waiting for its result.

Ben, meanwhile, wanders through the penthouse in a drugged state. He encounters the chalice from which Mr. Nas drinks and is fed from it himself. When Ben wakes, Constance and Dr. Phibes are nearby to explain pieces of what he experienced. Their presence makes it tempting to treat them as protectors, but the explanation is coming from people invested in the ritual.

Her bargain gives her a reason to use Ben

Episode 4 says Mr. Nas recruited Constance while trying to regain his throne. In exchange for helping him, she wanted another chance at motherhood. Tate and Addy return to her, giving that promise a powerful emotional reward. Her cooperation is therefore not just a vague attraction to evil. She believes she has received something she desperately wanted.

That makes Constance a dangerous person for Ben to trust. She can speak to him as someone who understands family loss and the temptation of a second chance. At the same time, the deal has tied her future to Mr. Nas’ success. She is unlikely to give Ben an impartial account of the cost of joining his scheme.

Mr. Nas remains the larger power

Constance and Phibes check the effect of the sacrifices on Mr. Nas. Their account suggests that his return is nearing completion. Ben has been drawn into that process, but Episode 4 does not fully explain what the chalice has done to him or whether he can resist its influence.

The episode’s answer is thus two-layered: Constance is the familiar face managing Ben’s immediate world, while Mr. Nas is the power she has chosen to serve. The fact that she once belonged to Murder House makes the reunion recognizable; her new bargain makes it threatening. Do you think Constance will protect Ben if Mr. Nas demands a greater sacrifice?
