Matchbox The Movie, starring John Cena and Jessica Biel, premieres today, October 9, 2026, on Apple TV. Inspired by Mattel’s popular Matchbox toy cars, the new action-adventure film follows a group of childhood friends who unexpectedly become involved in a dangerous international mission.
Directed by Sam Hargrave, known for Netflix’s Extraction films, the movie combines high-speed car chases, action sequences and comedy. Cena plays Sean, an undercover CIA agent whose return to his hometown puts his old friends in danger.
The film also stars Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro, alongside Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira and Golshifteh Farahani. With a runtime of two hours and six minutes, Matchbox The Movie joins Apple’s growing collection of original films.

Apple first unveiled the official trailer during San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, giving viewers a look at the film’s car chases, explosions and action scenes. The trailer follows Sean and his friends as their reunion quickly turns into a dangerous adventure.
Matchbox The Movie Plot: What Is John Cena’s New Film About?
The story begins when Sean (John Cena), a former leader of a close-knit childhood friend group, returns to his hometown after years away. His old friends expect a reunion, but Sean has been secretly working as an undercover CIA agent.
His return unexpectedly pulls the group into an international conspiracy, forcing them to travel across different locations while trying to prevent a major disaster.
Jessica Biel plays Aimee, one of Sean’s childhood friends, while Sam Richardson portrays Crosby, Teyonah Parris plays Charmaine and Arturo Castro takes on the role of Ted. As the group becomes involved in Sean’s dangerous mission, they must rely on their old friendship to survive.
The trailer features high-speed pursuits, vehicle crashes and intense confrontations as the friends struggle to understand the situation they have entered. The story also raises questions about Sean’s disappearance and what his former friends really know about his secret life.
We previously covered why Sean’s return puts his childhood friends in danger and whether his CIA identity could be hiding a bigger twist.
Hargrave’s background in action filmmaking is another major part of the movie. His work on the Extraction franchise involved elaborate fight scenes and vehicle pursuits, and Matchbox The Movie brings a similar style to its car-focused adventure.
