However, the negotiations become increasingly personal when St. John Smallwood (Pip Torrens) targets Nick’s (James McArdle) childhood and professional insecurities.
We learn that Nick struggled with a stress-induced stammer earlier in his career. Smallwood, who knew him as a junior lawyer, uses the nickname “Singer” to humiliate him, referring to the singing technique Nick once used to manage his speech.
Nick initially struggles to respond, leaving Carla frustrated with her lawyers and questioning their ability to secure a fair settlement.
Morgan Questions His Lawyers as Saeed Uncovers a Major Lead
Morgan also begins questioning Smallwood’s aggressive approach. He still has feelings for Carla and even writes her a heartfelt letter, hoping they can settle their differences.
Smallwood destroys the letter and reminds Morgan that Carla arranged the encounter with Flora Monroe. This revelation pushes Morgan away from reconciliation.
Meanwhile, junior associate Saeed discovers information suggesting Morgan’s company, Zephyr, could face a major ownership change involving businessman Michael Ancker.
The potential transaction gives Nick a new legal opening. If Morgan’s assets are moved during the divorce proceedings, Carla’s lawyers could challenge the arrangement and seek to prevent further transfers.
An interesting subplot also shows Saeed encountering Smallwood at a gay club, revealing a more vulnerable side of the otherwise intimidating lawyer. In an interview with TV Insider, actor Pip Torrens explained that the scene offers a brief glimpse into Smallwood’s private life.
War Episode 4 Ending Explained: Why Does Nick Decide to Go to Court?
Nick ultimately regains his confidence and decides to pursue a Mareva injunction, which could prevent Morgan from moving or disposing of assets while the legal dispute continues.
Taking the divorce to court creates a serious financial risk for Taylor & Byrne, whose finances are already under pressure. However, Serena supports Nick’s decision to fight Smallwood rather than accept an unfavorable settlement.
The episode ends with another betrayal taking shape. Johnny secretly copies Taylor & Byrne’s financial information and passes it to Cathcarts, giving the rival firm insight into its opponent’s weaknesses.
Johnny also shares an unexpected kiss with Carla, who remains unaware that he has been spying on her lawyers.
Their growing attraction creates another possible conflict for Johnny, whose personal feelings could interfere with his secret assignment.
Episode 4 leaves Carla’s divorce unresolved while setting up a courtroom battle that could threaten both firms. Nick has finally challenged Smallwood, but Johnny’s divided loyalties remain a serious danger.
According to HBO’s official series announcement, War follows rival London law firms through high-profile legal battles. The next episode, “Every Little Thing She Does,” is scheduled for October 29, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
