The situation becomes even worse when Ulf is exposed as a double agent. After initially working with the Greens, he takes Silverwing into battle and attacks the Black army, before turning once again and killing Ormund and Roddy the Ruin with dragonfire. Tumbleton is left devastated, while Daeron’s fate remains unclear.
Season 2 had ended with the major armies preparing for war, while Rhaenyra believed she had found a possible route to King’s Landing. Season 3 finally turned those preparations into open warfare, beginning with major losses and eventually allowing Rhaenyra and Daemon to take King’s Landing.
What does the Season 3 ending mean for Rhaenyra?
Rhaenyra’s biggest change happens away from the battlefield. After learning that Aegon and Sunfyre survived, she becomes increasingly determined to prove that she is Westeros’ rightful ruler.
She asks the High Septon to formally anoint her as queen. When he refuses, Rhaenyra orders Alyn to execute him and publicly declares herself the prince that was promised.
Her treatment of Helaena makes the change even clearer. Helaena refuses to eat while being held prisoner, and Rhaenyra orders her guards to force-feed her. Helaena eventually jumps from a window to her death rather than remain Rhaenyra’s hostage.
Rhaenyra then discovers Helaena’s tapestry, which includes an image of Helaena’s death and another vision that appears to point toward Rhaenyra’s bloody future. The scene leaves Rhaenyra facing a warning about where her rule is heading.
Aegon and Aemond are back together
At Harrenhal, Aemond hears a dragon and discovers that Aegon has returned with Sunfyre. Aemond believed both were dead and immediately asks his brother for forgiveness.
Aegon had initially come looking for a confrontation, but he instead orders Aemond to find Vhagar and help him reclaim the throne. Their uneasy reunion gives the Greens another chance to challenge Rhaenyra.
Season 4 will now deal with the consequences of Tumbleton, Helaena’s death and the renewed threat from Aegon. HBO has confirmed that the next season will bring House of the Dragon to an end.
