House of the Dragon Season 3 has ended, and the wait for Season 4 already feels long after a finale that pushed the Targaryen civil war into an even more dangerous phase. The fourth season will also bring the series to an end, giving the story one final run to settle the Dance of the Dragons.

Season 4 picks up after a brutal Tumbleton battle

Season 3 ends after the Battle of Tumbleton changes the balance of the war once again. Ulf turns against Rhaenyra during the fighting, while the destruction at Tumbleton leaves both armies damaged and several important characters dead. Helaena also dies after jumping from a tower, adding another tragedy to an already divided Targaryen family.
At the same time, Aegon II remains alive and returns to the larger conflict, while Rhaenyra becomes increasingly ruthless as she tries to hold power. Season 3 leaves both sides damaged, angry and increasingly willing to destroy anything standing between them and the Iron Throne.
The first two seasons slowly built toward open war. Season 3 finally delivered several major battles and moved the story deeper into the Dance of the Dragons, which means Season 4 has far less room for political hesitation.
House of the Dragon Season 4 should be the biggest season yet
The final season is being planned as a much larger conclusion, with more dragons, locations and major conflicts expected as the civil war reaches its final stages. Showrunner Ryan Condal has described the fourth season as a massive production and confirmed that the writers were already well into developing it while Season 3 was still being completed.
The aftermath of Tumbleton will play an important role, especially as alliances continue to break down. Rhaenyra’s growing obsession with power also looks set to become one of the central parts of the final season, while Aegon and the remaining Greens still have their own path back toward the throne.
Since Season 4 must complete the Dance of the Dragons and close the series, viewers should expect major battles, betrayals and several character stories to reach their final point. HBO has set the season for 2028, although an exact premiere date has not been announced.
