Lanterns Season 1, Episode 3 finally reveals how John Stewart became a Green Lantern candidate and why his complicated history with Hal Jordan runs much deeper than viewers knew.
Titled “OutKast,” the episode moves away from the main Rushville investigation for most of its runtime and focuses on John’s childhood, military career, and recruitment into the Green Lantern Corps. It also reveals that the Guardians have a very different plan for John than Hal realizes.

Episode 3 begins with John falling through a portal and landing inside an abandoned shopping mall. He eventually meets a woman played by Laura Linney, who reveals herself to be one of the Guardians of the Universe and begins interviewing him for a Green Lantern position.

The conversation takes viewers back to John’s childhood. His father, John Stewart Sr., was once considered by a Green Lantern ring before Hal Jordan received it. However, the ring rejected him after he admitted that he was afraid. The experience sends John Sr. into a downward spiral.
John’s mother, Bernadette, later learns from a Guardian that the qualities which attracted the ring could run in the family. She becomes determined to prepare her young son for another opportunity.
John therefore grows up under extreme pressure. His parents train him to control fear, including dangerous exercises involving guns and leaving him alone at night to find his way home. His childhood also explains the bird imagery that has followed John during the series. Bernadette told him that birds were watching him for the Guardians, although she eventually admits that she invented the story.
Hal Jordan unknowingly changes John Stewart’s life
As an adult, John joins the Marines and becomes an accomplished sniper. During one mission, he spends months preparing to eliminate a target, only for Hal Jordan to suddenly intervene and take the man away using his Green Lantern powers.
The resulting diplomatic fallout ends with John accepting a dishonorable discharge. He later attends art school, where the Guardians finally approach him and test his ability to use a ring by asking him to construct his father’s watch.
The biggest reveal arrives during John’s interview. The Guardian tells him that he has not simply been recruited as Hal’s backup. The Guardians want John to replace Hal because they believe the veteran Lantern has become unstable.
Hal has no idea.
When John returns home, Hal has already told his parents about his recruitment. Outside the house, Hal bluntly tells John that he does not want a sidekick or replacement and says John will only get his ring over his dead body.
That line carries much more weight after Episode 3, especially as Lanterns continues building toward the mystery surrounding Hal’s future.
Episode 4 arrives on September 6 and should return attention to the larger investigation while pushing John and Hal’s increasingly tense partnership forward.
