The earlier timeline shows Joe, Kaitlyn, Byron and Secretary of State Edwin Mullins dealing with the fallout from the Russian intelligence network operating inside the United States.

Their investigation reaches Senator Ryan Olson, who has been linked to foreign money. He faces the prospect of resignation or arrest after the team confronts him. Joe also makes it clear that he has another option, and Olson later kills himself rather than face the consequences publicly.

For a short period, Joe believes the operation is coming to an end. She tells her family that they could soon return to a more normal life, which gives the episode a darker edge because viewers already know where her story is heading.

Who is really behind Joe’s kidnapping?

The present-day storyline brings the biggest reveal.

Kyle searches for Oleksandra Balakin, hoping the former Russian operative can explain who took Joe. Oleksandra believes Iran is behind the operation and that Russian or Belarusian operatives only helped carry it out.

That theory becomes much harder to dismiss when Babat arrives.

Babat speaks Farsi and tells Joe that he has come to take her to her death. His appearance connects Joe’s current situation to earlier operations involving Iran and makes clear that her captors have a personal reason for targeting her.

The rescue team gets painfully close

Kyle and the team eventually trace an aircraft connected to the extraction plan and reach Texas, where they believe Joe is being held.

Cody and Grady confront men connected to the plane, but the encounter leaves them without a useful source. Meanwhile, Randy and Tex identify a suspicious house that appears to be connected to Joe’s location.

They are closer than they realize.

Joe remains somewhere around the Houston area, and the team effectively passes near the place where she is being held without rescuing her.

The episode ends with Babat brutally injuring Joe before preparing to move her again. Her team now understands more about the people behind the kidnapping, but their window to reach her is rapidly closing.

‘Lioness’ Season 3, Episode 6 leaves Joe in one of her worst situations yet while finally giving the rescue team a clearer idea of who they are fighting. With the search tightening around Texas, the next episode should focus heavily on whether Kyle and the others can reach Joe before Babat moves her out of their reach.
