Reacher Season 4 Episode 1 recap
Spoilers ahead for Reacher Season 4, Episode 1.
The episode opens with Reacher noticing Anna Merrick behaving strangely on a subway car. Her sweating, clothing and nervous movements make him suspect that she could be carrying a bomb. He approaches her and claims he can help, but Anna pulls out a revolver and kills herself.
Philadelphia detectives Tamara Green and Shaun Docherty question Reacher afterward. Reacher soon realizes authorities are waiting for unidentified federal agents from Washington, who appear particularly interested in whether Anna gave him anything before she died. Two other men later approach Reacher and finally reveal what everyone wants: a missing flash drive.
Reacher then meets Anna’s brother, Jacob Merrick, who says his sister worked in Army human resources and insists she would never willingly take her own life. Anna’s son Ben has also disappeared, adding another troubling piece to the mystery.
What is on the missing flash drive?
Reacher eventually meets Lila Hoth and her mother, Amisha. Lila has leukemia and says she needs a bone marrow transplant. She believes her biological father is John Sampson, a North Carolina congressman and presidential hopeful who served in Delta Force years earlier. Anna had reportedly obtained documents connecting Sampson to Lila, which were stored on the missing drive.
That information immediately turns Reacher’s investigation into something much larger. While searching military records at a library, he is attacked by a knife-wielding assassin who also wants the drive. Reacher kills him after a brutal fight between the archive shelves.
Another assassin targets Lila at her hotel, forcing Reacher into a second fight before armed attackers open fire from outside. Reacher gets Lila and Jacob away safely, but the episode closes with another major problem. Men ambush Reacher while he is heading to meet Jacob, shooting him with two tranquilizer darts before finally knocking him unconscious.
Where Season 4 goes next
Season 3 ended Reacher’s undercover operation against Zachary Beck and Francis Xavier Quinn, allowing Season 4 to begin with a separate case and a mostly new group of characters. The new story adapts Lee Child’s Gone Tomorrow and centers on the consequences of Anna’s death and the secrets connected to the missing flash drive.
Episode 1 leaves Reacher captured, while Jacob, Lila, Tamara and the missing Ben remain tied to a conspiracy that already reaches beyond Philadelphia. Prime Video has Episodes 1 through 3 available now, with Episode 4 scheduled for August 19.
