Three Scouts get three different tests
Hondo spends the episode trying to find someone who can lead the unit into a dangerous scene. Jude takes the first turn during a warehouse operation, but poor communication nearly leads to one officer shooting another. Sammy leads a later intervention around a suspected weapons exchange; it erupts into a firefight, leaving Hondo unconvinced that the group can function reliably.

The case is not merely a gang dispute over a shipment. The team comes to suspect that the son of a wounded gang leader wants to take power from his father. That suspicion draws them to the hospital, where the elder man is being treated. It is Malik’s first turn directing the approach as Scout, and the mission quickly becomes a test of his judgment rather than his ability to follow a plan.
The hostage standoff forces Malik’s call
The son gets close to his father inside the hospital and threatens him with a gun. Malik initially pursues the less violent option, attempting to persuade him to stop. That fits Malik’s earlier resistance to Hondo’s harsher tactics. But the standoff does not give him unlimited time to negotiate.
Malik finally directs Jude to take the shot. The decision saves the father but ends the son’s life, which is why the episode’s title is more than a routine tactical command. Malik has to accept that leading a rescue can mean authorizing a death. The outcome does not make the choice easy, and the team’s success does not erase its cost.
Hondo’s new confidence carries a hidden risk
Hondo sees Malik coordinate the squad and adapt when talking fails. Those are the qualities he has been searching for, so giving him the Scout role has a clear operational logic. It also places Malik closer to the center of future decisions. If the unit is being undermined from outside, its new point person is now in an especially sensitive position.
That is the ending’s second, quieter tension. Malik may have helped save a hostage, but his undisclosed contacts remain a threat to the team. The episode proves he can lead in a crisis without proving where his loyalty lies. Did Malik’s decision earn Hondo’s trust, or make the eventual betrayal worse? Share your take in the comments.
