Jimmy has gradually challenged Sweeney’s leadership, particularly after moving into cocaine and making his own arrangements with John Gotti. The conflict finally exploded after Sweeney and Eddie killed Sean, despite Jimmy promising that Sean would remain safe. Keenan then played the intercepted conversation for Jimmy, leading directly to Jimmy confronting Sweeney at gunpoint.

The official description for “The Irish Goodbye” confirms that their fallout will split the Westies between the old guard and younger members. Bridget will also continue her mission while discovering serious truths, Polk will increase pressure on Sweeney and Gotti, and Keenan will struggle with his guilt while Danny moves further away from him.

Jimmy probably stops short of killing Sweeney

The biggest question is whether Jimmy actually fires the gun.

A direct execution of Sweeney would certainly complete Jimmy’s rise, but the show has spent seven episodes building their relationship as something closer to a damaged father-and-son dynamic. Jimmy has challenged Sweeney repeatedly, yet he has also struggled with the consequences whenever members of his own circle die.

The more likely outcome is that their confrontation ends without Sweeney dying immediately. Instead, Jimmy could walk away and form his own faction, which fits the confirmed description that the gang will split between old and young members.

Sweeney could lose control even if he survives

Sweeney has spent the season arguing that survival depends on patience and cooperation with the Italians. Jimmy increasingly sees those compromises as weakness.

Sean’s murder gives Jimmy something he did not have before: a personal reason to openly challenge Sweeney and potentially convince younger Westies to follow him.

That means Sweeney could survive the finale but lose the authority that has kept the gang together. Such an ending would also leave plenty of room for another season if MGM+ chooses to continue the series.

Brendan Cahill may be exposed as an informant

Brendan’s unexpectedly early release from prison has become increasingly suspicious, and Episode 7 continued to blur his motives. The finale description says Bridget will discover “shattering truths,” making Brendan the obvious character to watch.

One strong possibility is that Brendan has been cooperating with authorities or manipulating Bridget for reasons she does not yet understand.

Bridget already refused to detonate the car bomb targeting Colonel Markham when civilians were nearby. Discovering that Brendan has lied to her could finally end her involvement with his IRA operation.

Keenan could sacrifice himself to protect Danny

Keenan has spent much of the season trapped between the FBI, Sweeney and his own corruption. His strongest motivation remains Danny, who continues moving closer to the criminal world that Keenan wants him to avoid.

The finale specifically mentions Keenan struggling with “a son slipping away,” which suggests Danny will become central to his final decision.

Keenan could finally cooperate fully with Polk, expose Sweeney and Gotti, or put himself in danger to keep Danny away from the Westies. His guilt over everything that has happened makes some form of sacrifice increasingly likely.

The Westies may end Season 1 completely divided

The most probable outcome is a finale that destroys the gang’s existing structure rather than neatly resolving every storyline.

Jimmy and Sweeney are already at war, Mickey remains unstable, Bridget has doubts about the IRA mission, and Polk now has more evidence against both the Westies and their Italian partners. The finale therefore has several ways to leave Hell’s Kitchen with a very different balance of power.
