Apple CEO Tim Cook says he keeps an open and working relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump, and he explained that approach while reflecting on how he handles complex political environments as the leader of a global company.

Cook described the Trump administration as approachable and willing to listen, which he sees as important when representing Apple’s interests across different markets and regulatory systems. He stressed that engagement matters even when both sides disagree, because direct communication gives him a clearer understanding of how decisions get made.

Cook says engagement matters more than agreement

In an interview with Esquire, Cook shared how he views his interactions with political leaders and why he continues those conversations despite differences in views.

“The Trump administration is very accessible. So you can talk with them about your point of view on things. They may not agree, but you can engage. You can be heard. You may not, in the end, be able to convince. But engagement for me, not just in the U.S. but around the world, is so important because it is very complex, working through local laws, local customs, local culture, local regulations.”

Cook also pointed to the need for direct discussions, saying “your voice just goes into the wind” if you stay on the sidelines instead of engaging in person.

“The only way you get a feel for that is to sit before someone and communicate and engage.”

Cook said his approach does not change Apple’s core values, as he continues to focus on privacy, environmental responsibility, accessibility, and education while interacting with leaders who may not share the same priorities.

He also addressed growing political division, saying open discussions help prevent views from becoming rigid, while adding that he focuses on policy decisions rather than politics in his role.
