Apple introduced the MacBook Neo, a new entry in the Mac lineup that also brings an unusual name for an Apple laptop. Many people expected the company to revive the simple “MacBook” name for its lower-cost model, but Apple went with something different. The company says the new name reflects the personality of the product and the audience it hopes to attract.
Before launch, rumors suggested Apple would release the device as just “MacBook,” which would have matched the company’s simple naming approach for products like iPhone and iPad. Apple also used the plain MacBook name before, first between 2006 and 2012, and later from 2015 to 2019. Instead, Apple introduced the laptop as MacBook Neo and explained that the name captures the idea of something fresh and energetic.
TechRadar’s Lance Ulanoff spoke with Apple about the naming decision shortly after the launch event. Apple said the name aimed to reflect the tone and purpose of the device.
“We wanted something that felt fun and friendly, and fresh, and felt like it really suited the spirit of this product,” said Colleen Novielli, Director of Mac Product Marketing at Apple.
Apple built the MacBook Neo as a product that feels youthful and approachable, and the name supports that direction. The company paired the branding with bright color options and marketing images that highlight students and younger users. The overall presentation focuses on energy, creativity, and everyday computing.
Apple emphasizes a new identity
Apple also made clear that MacBook Neo should not be seen as a revival of the earlier 12-inch MacBook. According to the company, the new device represents a completely new design rather than a continuation of an old product line.
“I think some may draw parallels to the MacBook product that you’re referencing, but really, you know, MacBook Neo is an entirely new product that was, again, reimagined from the ground up,” Novielli explained.
Apple marketing chief Greg Joswiak reinforced that message when discussing the new laptop and its place in the Mac lineup.
“MacBook Neo is new, exciting, original, and HERE,” Joswiak said.
The MacBook Neo starts at $599 in the United States and drops to $499 for college students. Apple offers the laptop in Blush, Citrus, Indigo, and Silver, and it includes a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, up to 512GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM. The system runs on a version of Apple’s A18 Pro chip and promises up to 16 hours of battery life.
Apple launches the MacBook Neo on March 11, and the company expects the new model to attract students and first-time Mac buyers looking for a more affordable laptop.
