Apple Intelligence supports 16 languages when iOS 27 ships on Monday, September 14, but nine of its features carry a narrower requirement: English only. Several of those are narrowed again, to four countries or to the United States.
That second layer is easy to miss, because Apple publishes the 16-language list prominently and the English conditions in per-feature footnotes. If you set your iPhone to one of the other 15 languages, you get Apple Intelligence, but not all of it.
Key facts
| Item | What Apple publishes |
|---|---|
| Apple Intelligence languages | 16, including Simplified and Traditional Chinese as separate entries |
| Features Apple restricts to English | Nine, by our count of Apple’s own footnotes |
| Siri AI at launch | Beta, English to start |
| Siri AI languages in October | French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish |
| Narrowest country scope | Voice Control, in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia |
| Only feature with a second language named | Workout Buddy, English or Spanish |
| Release | Monday, September 14, 2026, free update |
The nine features Apple limits to English
| Feature | Apple’s language scope |
|---|---|
| Siri AI | Available in English to start |
| Visual Intelligence | Requires a supported English language variant |
| Call Context | English |
| Messages and Mail Suggestions | English |
| Intelligent file naming | English |
| Safari Notify Me | English |
| Voice Control | English, in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia |
| Audio Intelligence on Apple Watch | English, US first, more languages planned |
| Redesigned Health app | Starting in US English, more languages to follow |
Some of those wordings are temporary by their own terms. Siri AI is English to start, and Apple’s press release says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish arrive in October. The Audio Intelligence support document says additional languages are planned for future releases. Others, including Call Context and Safari Notify Me, are listed as English with no follow-up language named at all.

Where English is not enough either
Two of the nine add a country condition on top of the language one. Voice Control is English in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, which leaves English speakers in Ireland, India, South Africa, New Zealand and elsewhere outside the list Apple publishes.
Audio Intelligence, the new category covering Sound Recognition, Music Recognition, Live Rewind and Siri Recap on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, launches in English in the United States first. The redesigned Health app is the same shape: later this year, starting in US English.
Separately from language, Apple states that Siri AI will not be initially available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, and that features relying on Siri AI are caught too. That is a regional exclusion rather than a linguistic one, and it applies even if your device is set to English.
The one feature that names a second language
Workout Buddy, the coaching voice in watchOS 27, is the exception. Apple says it works in English or Spanish, which makes it the only feature in this group with a second language stated up front rather than promised.
Apple Music offers a different kind of partial coverage. Lyrics translation gains seven new pairings in iOS 27, including English into French, German, Italian, Korean and Spanish, plus French into English and Japanese into English. Those are pairings rather than languages, so a feature can support your language in one direction and not the other.
What the 16-language list does cover
The rest of Apple Intelligence is not English only. Image Playground, Genmoji, the Photos editing tools, the enhanced Clean Up tool, Image Wand in Notes and the Accessibility features Apple describes for VoiceOver and captions all sit under the 16-language umbrella without a separate English note.
The hardware gate is unchanged in every case. Apple Intelligence needs iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or iPhone 16 and later, which includes the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo, and language support changes nothing for an iPhone below that line.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not dated additional languages for Call Context, Safari Notify Me, Messages and Mail Suggestions, intelligent file naming or Visual Intelligence. It has not said which English variants count as supported for Visual Intelligence, has not listed the languages Audio Intelligence will add, and has not explained why Voice Control is limited to four countries. It has published no Hindi or Arabic support in any part of Apple Intelligence.
The first check comes on Monday, September 14, when iOS 27 arrives as a free update. Whether a non-English device simply hides these features or offers them in English is not something Apple has documented, and it will be visible on the day.
