Apple Is Reportedly Rebuilding iPhone Photo Editing Around AI in iOS 27

iOS 27 Brings 4 New Features Beyond Siri That You Should Know

Apple appears ready to make a major push into AI-powered photo editing with iOS 27, bringing several advanced tools to the Photos app that could make image improvements much faster and more practical for everyday users. While Apple has slowly introduced AI features through Apple Intelligence, this update reportedly focuses heavily on editing, reframing, and expanding photos in ways that directly compete with Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices.

Bloomberg reports that Apple plans to add a dedicated “Apple Intelligence Tools” section inside the Photos app’s editing interface, giving users access to several new features that work within seconds.

“The features will allow users to extend, enhance and reframe images using on-device AI models. Processing typically takes a few seconds.”

These upgrades suggest Apple wants to close the gap with Android rivals that have offered aggressive AI photo tools for years.

New AI photo tools coming to iOS 27

According to the report, Apple’s new editing suite will include:

  • Extend: Expands photo edges to generate additional scenery or image details beyond the original frame
  • Enhance: Automatically improves lighting, colors, and overall image quality
  • Reframe: Let users shift perspective in spatial photos after capture
  • Clean Up: Apple’s existing object removal tool will remain part of the expanded AI section

This setup gives iPhone users quicker editing options without relying on third-party apps, while also pushing Apple deeper into generative AI photography.

Apple still faces reliability issues

Internal testing reportedly shows that Extend and Reframe remain inconsistent, which creates uncertainty around how polished these tools will be by launch.

“The Extend and Reframe tools don’t perform reliably during internal testing.”

That means Apple could delay or reduce some capabilities if its AI models fail to improve before release.

Beyond photo editing, iOS 27 will also focus on Siri upgrades, battery efficiency, and broader stability improvements. Apple is expected to unveil the software at WWDC on June 8, where these AI-powered changes will likely become a major part of its next-generation iPhone experience.
