Apple is developing a new photo verification system called Apple Reference Image that can confirm whether a photo was actually captured with an iPhone camera. The feature appears in a privacy disclosure included with iOS 27 beta 5, although Apple has not enabled it yet.
The system will add an optional Reference mode inside the Camera app, where users can capture photos with extra provenance information embedded in the file metadata. Apple can then use that information to authenticate the image and confirm that it came from a physical iPhone camera sensor.

When a user taps the Reference badge on a supported image, the iPhone sends sensor signatures, capture timing information, hardware identifiers and other verification data to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers. The system checks whether the camera genuinely captured the image, assigns a unique ID and returns an authenticated version to the device.
Apple says it receives sensor data, a hash and the authentication result during this process, while the raw photo itself is not retained by Apple. The company can also reject authentication from sensors it believes have been compromised and revoke earlier approvals linked to those sensors.

Authenticated images will work across iPhone, iPad and Mac, while Mac users will also be able to click the Reference badge to inspect verification details.
The feature appears especially useful for journalists, professional photographers and others who need stronger evidence that an image came directly from a camera. Apple also mentions photos, videos and uncropped footage in its disclosure, which suggests Reference mode could eventually support video authentication as well.
Apple Reference Image addresses the growing problem of realistic AI-generated media by providing hardware-backed proof that supported content came from a real camera sensor. Similar authentication systems already exist through C2PA Content Credentials used by several major camera and smartphone companies.
