Apple Releases macOS 11.7.11 and watchOS 10.6.2 Updates for Older Devices

Apple has released macOS 11.7.11, watchOS 10.6.2, and watchOS 9.6.4 for older Macs and Apple Watches that cannot run macOS 26 or watchOS 26. These updates keep key services like device activation, iMessage, and FaceTime working past January 2027, so users do not lose access on older hardware.

Apple explained in its release notes that the updates are meant to extend the certificate used by features like device activation, iMessage, and FaceTime. This certificate change ensures these services continue to work after January 2027.

What devices get these updates

watchOS 9.6.4 is the final version for devices tied to iOS 16. This includes iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. watchOS 10.6.2 supports Apple Watch Series 4, Apple Watch Series 5, and the original Apple Watch SE.

macOS 11.7.11 is for older Macs that cannot move to macOS 26. Apple also released macOS Catalina Security Update 2026-001 and watchOS 6.3.1 for even older devices.

How to install the updates

On a Mac:

  • Open Settings
  • Go to Software Update
  • Download and install macOS 11.7.11

On Apple Watch:

  • Open the Apple Watch app on iPhone
  • Tap General
  • Tap Software Update and install

These updates keep older Apple devices usable and connected for years to come.
