Apple is testing its Background Security Improvement feature again across iOS 26.3, iPadOS 26.3, and macOS Tahoe 26.3. This is the second test in a short time. Developers and public beta users can now install a new background update without waiting for a full software release. The goal stays the same: deliver security fixes faster while the main operating system remains unchanged.
The feature focuses on core system components such as Safari, WebKit, and other key libraries. Instead of bundling every security patch into a large update, Apple now pushes smaller fixes in the background. As a result, users receive protection sooner and with less disruption. At the same time, regular software updates continue as usual.
How to Install the Update
You can install the update from the Settings app. Go to Privacy and Security, scroll to Background Security Improvements, and tap Install. If you turn on Automatically Install, the system applies these updates on its own when they become available. If you choose not to install them, you still receive the same fixes later through a normal software update.
Apple says these updates provide “additional security protections between software updates for Safari, WebKit, and other system libraries.” The company also warns that Background Security Updates can cause “rare instances of compatibility issues.” If that happens, Apple may remove the update for a short time and improve it in a later software release.
For now, the second test signals that Apple plans to rely more on this system. It allows faster security responses while keeping the overall update process simple and predictable.
