Apple TV completes 19 years since its launch, as reports suggest a new model may arrive soon. Apple introduced the original Apple TV in January 2007, and released it in March the same year. The device marked Apple’s early step into home entertainment.
From simple streaming box to smart hub
The first Apple TV focused on streaming content from a Mac or PC. Users could access movies, music, and photos through iTunes. It did not support apps or third party services. The device included a 40GB hard drive and supported 720p video output.

Apple described the product as a “hobby,” which showed its limited role at the time. Over the years, Apple changed its approach and turned Apple TV into a full streaming platform.
In 2010, Apple removed the hard drive and introduced a smaller design focused on online streaming. The biggest shift came in 2015 when Apple launched tvOS and added the App Store. This allowed developers to build apps and games for the platform.
Apple later added 4K support in 2017 and improved performance with faster processors. The current model, released in November 2022, runs on the A15 Bionic chip and supports advanced features.
Apple TV today and what comes next
Today, Apple TV works as a central hub for Apple services like Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, AirPlay, and HomeKit. It offers strong integration with other Apple devices and focuses on a premium user experience.
While competitors like Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Google TV dominate budget options, Apple continues to target the high end market.
Reports suggest Apple may launch a new Apple TV soon with a faster chip and improved wireless connectivity.
