Apple is taking another big step in live sports production, and this time the company is putting the entire spotlight on the iPhone 17 Pro during a professional Major League Soccer broadcast on Apple TV. The upcoming MLS match between the LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo FC will become “the first time iPhone will be used to capture the entirety of a major professional live sporting event broadcast,” according to Apple.
The match streams live on Apple TV this Saturday, May 23, at 7:30 p.m. PT from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Apple says viewers will see team warmups, player introductions, “in-net goal angles,” and crowd-atmosphere footage, all captured using iPhone 17 Pro cameras placed throughout the stadium.
Apple Expands iPhone Into Live Sports Production
Apple first tested the iPhone 17 Pro during a September 2025 “Friday Night Baseball” game between the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park. The company used the device to capture cinematic stadium footage and select live moments during the broadcast, and Apple says the production received strong fan response afterward.
Now Apple is moving beyond experimental use cases and turning the iPhone into the primary production camera system for an entire live sporting event. The company says the smaller form factor allows “dynamic new perspectives that bring viewers closer to the action” while still delivering the “pristine video quality fans expect.”
Apple also highlighted the iPhone 17 Pro’s hardware, including its triple 48MP Fusion camera system, Apple Log 2 video support, and the “equivalent of eight lenses in a compact form factor.”
Apple TV already streams Major League Soccer, Friday Night Baseball, and Formula 1 content, but this broadcast pushes Apple deeper into professional live production technology. If the MLS broadcast performs well, Apple will likely continue expanding iPhone-based production workflows across more live sports events throughout the 2026 season.
