Illinois residents can start using their driver’s license or state ID in the Wallet app on November 19. The feature gives you a quick way to show proof of identity or age on your iPhone or Apple Watch at supported airports and businesses. It has been available in several states for years, and now Illinois is joining the list.
You can use the Wallet ID at Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports, along with Lambert airport in St. Louis. The rollout also includes support from Illinois’ Secretary of State, who confirmed that a free Mobile ID Verifier app will help businesses check age for alcohol and other restricted purchases. The app arrives in the App Store tomorrow.
Here’s what you need to know before you start using it.
How Setup Works
You set up a Wallet ID by opening the Wallet app, tapping the plus button, choosing Driver’s License and ID Cards, and following the steps. Apple requires an iPhone 8 or later with iOS 16.5 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 9.5 or later. These requirements ensure the feature works securely.
