Live Rewind, Siri Recap, Sound Recognition and Shazam detection on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 all depend on the iPhone paired with the watch, and Apple’s own requirement for that iPhone is stricter than the one it sets for Apple Intelligence generally. Apple’s newsroom release, its Series 12 marketing page and its iOS 27 documentation lay out exactly where that line falls.
Apple groups the four features under the name Audio Intelligence, and all four are new to the S11 chip inside both watches. Everything below is drawn only from Apple’s own published pages.

What is Audio Intelligence, and what does the Secure Exclave do with what it hears?
The S11 chip in both Series 12 and Ultra 4 includes what Apple calls a Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment used for on-device audio processing. Apple states that audio picked up for these four features is processed inside that compartment and deleted immediately. Apple’s own description does not say the audio ever leaves the watch or is stored anywhere, for any of the four features named above.

Which iPhone do you actually need?
Apple’s support documentation ties Live Rewind and Siri Recap specifically to iPhone 16 or later. Sound Recognition and Shazam detection are tied to the watch’s own S11 chip rather than a named iPhone generation in the material Apple has published, though both still require a paired iPhone running iOS 27. That distinction matters for anyone planning to keep an older iPhone alongside a new watch: the watch itself will pair and track health data regardless, but two of the four headline audio features simply will not appear in Settings until the paired phone qualifies.
Why doesn’t Apple Intelligence’s own iPhone list apply here?
Apple’s iOS 27 page lists full Apple Intelligence as available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 or later, a wider list than the Watch’s own Audio Intelligence floor. That means an iPhone 15 Pro owner gets Apple Intelligence on the phone itself but, paired with a new Apple Watch, does not get Live Rewind or Siri Recap on the wrist. Apple has not explained the gap in anything it has published; treat any explanation for it, including one about processing demand, as a reasonable guess rather than Apple’s stated reason.
Is Audio Intelligence available in the EU?
No, not initially. Apple’s own footnotes for this year’s watches list Audio Intelligence as not available in the EU at launch, the same restriction Apple has applied to Siri AI on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Apple has not published a EU timeline for either, and it has not said whether the restriction applies to all four Audio Intelligence features equally or to some more than others.
When does Sound Recognition actually arrive?
Apple’s Series 12 marketing page dates Sound Recognition to “coming late 2026,” with no specific day named. Apple has not published an equally specific date, or an equally vague one, for Live Rewind, Siri Recap or Shazam detection in the same release, so treat those three as available closer to the watch’s own launch unless Apple says otherwise.
