Apple Names the Readiness App on Two Apple Watch Pages and Leaves It Off the watchOS 27 List

Apple lists a new Readiness app on exactly two pages: the one for Apple Watch Series 12 and the one for Apple Watch Ultra 4. It is not in the watchOS 27 feature list Apple publishes, and Apple has said nothing about whether Series 11, Ultra 3 or Apple Watch SE 3 get it.

That matters because watchOS 27 is a free update for eight watches, not two. Apple lists Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9, Series 10, Series 11 and Series 12, plus Ultra 2, Ultra 3 and Ultra 4, so the update reaches six models Apple has never mentioned in the same breath as Readiness.

What Apple does put in the watchOS 27 list

The feature list on Apple’s own watchOS pages runs to more than a dozen items and none of them is Readiness. It names Siri AI, a dedicated Siri app, the dynamic app grid, the single-handed tap gesture for the Smart Stack, Smart Stack widget suggestions, Workout Buddy without a nearby iPhone, improved treadmill and indoor walk accuracy, Cycle Tracking with perimenopause and menopause support, a redesigned Find My, Liquid Glass, Call Context, faster Music playback, step count syncing with the Health app, custom Wallet passes and child account setup.

Readiness instead sits in the hardware marketing, next to the Health Sensing System, which is new to Series 12 and Ultra 4. Apple describes the two together on both product pages, and it never states that one requires the other.

The temptation here is to reason from the sensor gap: Series 11, Ultra 3 and SE 3 run the older S10 chip and the previous sensor generation, so it would be easy to assume Readiness needs the new hardware. Apple has not said that, and we are not going to say it for them.

Why the silence is awkward

Readiness draws on recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep. Every one of those categories exists on watches Apple already sells and already updates, which is precisely why a reader with a Series 10 on the wrist will look for the app on Monday and find either a pleasant surprise or nothing at all.

Apple has published no support document for Series 12, Ultra 4 or watchOS 27 at the time of writing, and its usual per-feature availability pages, the ones that list a feature and then the exact models it runs on, have not appeared yet. Until they do, the honest answer to “will my watch get Readiness” is that Apple has not published one.

What Apple has not said

  • Whether the Readiness app installs on any watch other than Series 12 and Ultra 4.
  • Whether Readiness requires the new Health Sensing System or the S11 chip.
  • Why Readiness is absent from the published watchOS 27 feature list.
  • Whether a Series 11 or Ultra 3 owner sees readiness in the Health app Insights tab instead.
  • Any minimum sensing frequency the score needs from the watch.
  • Any region or language restriction on Readiness specifically.

watchOS 27 arrives free on Monday, September 14, which is the first moment an older watch either shows the app or does not, and Series 12 and Ultra 4 reach stores on Friday, September 18. Our event recap has the full announcement.
