Apple Watch Series 12 Reads Your Heart 60 Times More Often Than Series 11

Apple’s own marketing pages for Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 state two multipliers almost nobody has quoted as numbers: background heart rate readings now arrive 60 times more often than on last year’s watch, and HRV readings arrive 24 times more often. Apple prints both figures on the watches’ product pages, not in the body of the September 9 press release.

The two multipliers are identical across both new watches. Apple Watch Series 12 states “60x more frequent background heart rate readings than Series 11” and “24x more frequent HRV readings than Series 11.” Apple Watch Ultra 4 states the same two numbers against Ultra 3 instead. Same jump, two different watches, two different baselines.

The absolute numbers behind the multiplier

Apple does publish one set of absolute figures alongside the multipliers. Heart rate now updates “every five seconds, all day long,” and HRV is measured “as often as every five minutes,” a cadence Apple’s own health release describes as “24 times more often than before.” Those two intervals, five seconds and five minutes, are the only raw sampling rates either watch’s page states. The 60x and 24x figures are comparisons built on top of them, not separate measurements.

What Apple does not restate: the old cadence

To check either multiplier yourself, you would need Series 11’s or Ultra 3’s own background heart rate and HRV sampling intervals from last year. Neither watch’s current page restates that older number. Apple gives you the new cadence and the ratio, and expects the ratio to stand on its own without the reader ever seeing the number it was divided by.

Apple’s own wording, “every five seconds, all day long,” implies roughly 17,280 possible background heart rate checks across a full 24-hour day, if that interval held constant the whole time. Apple does not publish a daily reading total itself; that number is simple arithmetic on the cadence Apple does state, offered here only to show what “every five seconds” actually adds up to before any multiplier is applied to it.

One upgrade, applied uniformly, except for one watch

Both multipliers appear word for word on Series 12‘s page and Ultra 4‘s page, which means Apple rolled the same sensing upgrade across its entire current lineup with one exception. Apple Watch SE 3 is not named alongside either multiplier in the material Apple has published, and Apple has not stated whether SE 3’s own heart rate or HRV sampling changed this year at all.

What made the jump possible

ComponentWhat Apple states
Heart sensorsNew optical and electrical heart sensor design, with larger, more power-efficient green LEDs
ChipS11, described by Apple as its most powerful wearable chip to date
New HRV splitRecovery HRV and Overall HRV, tracked as two separate readings rather than one

Apple attributes the frequency jump to the redesigned sensors and the S11 chip together, without separating how much of the 60x and 24x figures come from each. The new Recovery HRV and Overall HRV split feeds Apple’s Readiness score and the watches’ new daytime Vitals view, both covered in Apple’s own event recap.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published the previous sampling interval for Series 11 or Ultra 3 background heart rate and HRV readings, has not said whether the 60x and 24x figures were measured under the same conditions as its separate 1,000-participant accuracy study, and has not extended either multiplier claim to Apple Watch SE 3. Series 12 and Ultra 4 reach stores Friday, September 18, alongside watchOS 27 on Monday, September 14, and the figures above are the ones published as of this week.
