Apple Watch Series 12 measures heart rate every five seconds and HRV as often as every five minutes, and Apple still rates it at up to 24 hours of normal use and up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode. Those are the same battery figures Apple publishes for Series 11.
The only explanation Apple offers for taking far more readings without moving the rated runtime is hardware: larger power-efficient green LEDs in the new optical heart sensor, and the S11 chip. Apple publishes no power figures, no test conditions and no measurement of what the extra sensing costs.

The sensing rates, and the claims attached to them
Apple publishes two absolute rates for the Health Sensing System. Heart rate is measured every five seconds, all day. HRV is measured as often as every five minutes, and reported in two variants Apple names separately: Recovery HRV, which it describes as covering daily stress and recovery, and overall HRV.

On top of those it makes two relative claims: 60 times more frequent background heart rate readings than Series 11, and 24 times more frequent HRV readings than Series 11. Neither multiple is accompanied by the Series 11 number it is measured against.
The battery ratings that did not move
Apple rates Series 12 at up to 24 hours of normal use, up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode and 80 percent charge in about 30 minutes. Every one of those figures matches what Apple’s own comparison grid lists for Series 11, which ran the S10 chip and the previous sensor set.
Reading those two facts together is the point. The headline sensing frequency rises by a stated multiple, the rated all-day runtime does not change, and Apple never sets out the power budget that would connect the two.
What Apple credits, and what it does not quantify
Apple’s stated reasons are short. The optical heart sensor uses larger power-efficient green LEDs. The S11 is described as Apple’s most powerful wearable chip, a 64-bit dual-core processor with a four-core Neural Engine, and it carries a Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment used for on-device audio processing with immediate deletion.

- Apple does not say whether the five-second rate holds in Low Power Mode.
- Apple does not say what happens to the rate during a workout or overnight.
Where the numbers did move
Two figures did change, and both are about charging and workouts rather than all-day runtime. Series 12 is rated at up to 10 hours of outdoor workout, which Apple describes as 25 percent more than before without printing the earlier figure, and a 15-minute charge is now worth up to 12 hours of normal use, which Apple describes as 50 percent faster charging. Apple Watch Ultra 4 gets the same treatment on a longer scale.

The five-minute figure is the one that matters most to the new features, because overnight vitals compare Recovery HRV with your personal baseline and that comparison needs the watch on the wrist while you sleep. Apple publishes the top-up figure and leaves the routine to you.

- Whether heart rate is still sampled every five seconds in Low Power Mode.
- The Series 11 outdoor workout rating the 25 percent claim is measured against.
