Apple’s first foldable iPhone might be thicker because of a bigger battery

Apple’s Foldable iPhone to Feature 24MP Under-Display Camera

Apple’s first foldable iPhone is shaping up to be a different kind of foldable. Early details point to a thicker body, and the reason seems simple. Apple wants to fit a bigger battery inside the device. While most foldable makers now chase slimmer and lighter designs, Apple appears ready to go in the opposite direction to deliver longer battery life.

A recent rumor from user yeux1122 on Naver blog claims the company is testing a large 5,400 to 5,800mAh battery. Not to mention, this comes from the same source that was pretty accurate about the iPhone Air battery details. For comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro Max with eSIM has a 5,088mAh cell.

Even if we assume that Apple is going to pick a lower number for the new range, the foldable prototype would still have to get a bigger battery, considering the display size and stuff. We can compare it to that of Samsung Fold devices; all of the foldable devices hold a bigger battery than the standard ones.

Apple Might Accept a Thicker Design

Some reports say the foldable looks like two iPhone Air units placed together when opened. Apple already proved it can shrink logic boards while keeping strong performance. That engineering gave the iPhone Air enough space for a 3,149mAh battery. Using the same approach on a foldable helps Apple add more capacity, but it also increases thickness and weight.

Apple does not seem worried about a slightly bulkier device. Next year’s iPhone 18 Pro Max is already rumored to be thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. A larger battery increases runtime, and more internal space allows Apple to place a bigger vapor chamber, which improves heat control during heavy use.

Display Details Still Changing

Exact foldable dimensions are still unknown. One prototype reportedly used a 7.74-inch main display and a 5.49-inch cover screen. These numbers can change as Apple moves closer to mass production. The foldable iPhone is still under testing, and the hardware may shift again.

Apple’s first foldable will likely arrive with trade-offs, but a thicker body that delivers longer battery life hints at a practical direction for the device.
