Apple’s Low-Cost MacBook and Studio Display 2 Spotted in macOS 26.3

Apple’s Low-Cost MacBook and Studio Display 2 Spotted in macOS 26.3

Apple’s macOS 26.3 has revealed fresh clues about Apple’s upcoming hardware, including a rumored low-cost MacBook and two new Studio Display models. The latest public build contains internal references that strongly suggest these products are nearing launch. As more software updates expose the same identifiers, the picture becomes clearer, and the timeline feels closer.

The new evidence comes directly from Apple’s released software, which adds weight to months of reports about a budget MacBook and refreshed external displays. These findings align with earlier rumors about a special product announcement expected in early March.

Macworld’s Filipe Espósito discovered kernel extensions inside macOS 26.3 that reference three unreleased devices. Based on previous reporting from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and others, the codenames likely point to the following products:

  • J700: Lower-cost MacBook
  • J427: New Studio Display
  • J527: Higher-end Studio Display

These codenames have appeared in earlier updates such as macOS 26.2 and iOS 18.5, but their presence in the final public build of macOS 26.3 signals that development is moving forward.

Low-Cost MacBook Details

Apple’s Low-Cost MacBook Expected to Drive 25 Percent of 2025 Mac Sales

The J700 codename refers to Apple’s rumored entry-level MacBook, which will sit below the MacBook Air. Unlike current Macs, this model is expected to use an A-series chip instead of an M-series chip. Reports suggest it will run on the same A18 Pro chip found in the iPhone 16 Pro.

Benchmark results show that the A18 Pro performs slightly better than the M1 in several tasks, which makes it capable enough for students and everyday users. The laptop will reportedly feature a display slightly under 13 inches, an aluminum build, and 8GB of RAM. Bright color options such as yellow, green, blue, and pink are also rumored.

Pricing estimates range between $599 and $799 in the United States. If accurate, this would make it Apple’s most affordable modern Mac and mark the return of the “MacBook” branding without the Air or Pro label.

Studio Display Refresh

macOS 26.3 also references two new Studio Display models under the J427 and J527 codenames. At least one of them is expected to feature a 27-inch panel with mini-LED backlighting, HDR support, and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz with ProMotion technology. The display may include an A19 or A19 Pro chip to handle features such as Spatial Audio and improved webcam processing.

The current Studio Display, launched in March 2022, offers a 27-inch 5K panel with 60Hz refresh rate and 600 nits brightness. If mini-LED and HDR arrive in the next version, users can expect better contrast, higher brightness, and smoother motion.

The second display model remains a mystery. It could offer a larger screen size or position itself as a more premium option for professional users.

macOS 26.3 does not reference new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or Mac Studio models, but the confirmed support for the MacBook and Studio Display suggests Apple plans to unveil at least these devices soon. As software support appears in public builds, the hardware launch typically follows.
