Some iPhone 17 users can’t finish the Apple Intelligence model download. When this happens, you lose features like Genmoji, Image Playground, and Writing Tools until the download completes. Apple knows about the problem and plans a fix. It’s not yet clear if a server change will solve it or if an iOS update will carry the patch.
You see a few common symptoms. Apple Intelligence works for a day or two, then stops. Siri reverts to the older behavior. Settings says Apple Intelligence is “downloading,” asks for Wi-Fi and power, and sits there. Storage shows several gigabytes already on device. Users have reported this in the U.S., Europe, and Australia.
Apple has already released iOS 26.1 public beta along with a developer beta earlier and preparing iOS 26.0.1. Either could include related fixes. If your phone is otherwise stable, keep an eye on Software Update.
What you can try now
Work through these steps in order. Stay on Wi-Fi and keep the phone on power while you test.
- Turn off Cellular, join a reliable Wi-Fi network, and leave the phone plugged in for an extended stretch.
- Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait 30 seconds, then turn it off.
- Make your device language and Siri language match. If needed, switch to another supported language, let it settle, then switch back.
- Reset Network Settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Reconnect to Wi-Fi.
- Reset All Settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings. This doesn’t erase your data, but you’ll re-enter Wi-Fi and other preferences.
- If nothing helps, back up, erase the iPhone, and restore from iCloud. Several users say a clean reinstall restored Apple Intelligence.
If your download remains stuck, avoid constant toggling. Leave the phone on power and Wi-Fi so any server-side fix or background process can complete. Apple’s own guidance also calls out the need for Wi-Fi, power, matching languages, and sufficient storage for on-device models.
