Foldable iPhone Screen Could Feel Tougher Than Current Foldables

Apple’s iPhone Fold may look more like an iPad when opened

Apple is testing new display protection materials for its first foldable iPhone, with a clear focus on durability and screen feel. The company wants the foldable display to stand apart from rival devices, especially in how the screen resists scratches and daily wear. As a result, Apple is closely evaluating the protective film that sits on top of the ultra thin glass used in foldable screens.

According to a supply chain report from The Elec, Apple is testing two materials for this outer layer. The options include polyethylene terephthalate, commonly known as PET, and colorless polyimide, often called CPI. This protective film matters because it is the surface users touch every day. It plays a major role in durability, clarity, and overall feel.

Most foldable phones today use ultra thin glass to improve sharpness and rigidity. However, the glass alone is not enough. Manufacturers add a flexible polymer film on top to protect against scratches and impact. Samsung Electronics currently uses PET film on its Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip models. Apple is exploring CPI instead as part of a clear effort to differentiate its design.

CPI costs more than PET, but it offers higher surface hardness and stronger scratch resistance. Industry sources say this advantage makes CPI a serious contender for Apple’s final choice.

“Transparent PI film is more expensive than PET film, but its higher surface hardness improves scratch resistance.”

As Apple tests CPI, Kolon Industry has emerged as a possible supplier. The company previously built a mass production line for CPI after expecting strong demand from foldable devices. At the same time, Lens Technology is expected to supply the ultra-thin glass and handle bonding the final protective film.

Other rumors point to these possible features:

  • 7.8-inch crease-free inner display
  • 5.5-inch cover display
  • Touch ID
  • Two rear cameras
  • A20 chip and C2 modem

The final decision on the protective film should arrive soon, as Apple moves closer to launching its first foldable iPhone alongside the Apple iPhone 18 Pro lineup later this year.
