Apple has released the iOS 26.5 Release Candidate, which signals that the final version will reach all users next week, and this update focuses on three practical changes that affect messaging, Maps, and visual customization on the iPhone.

Apple says this update introduces end to end encrypted RCS messaging in beta, a new Pride Luminance wallpaper, and improvements across the system, along with bug fixes and security updates, which makes it a small but meaningful update after more than a month of testing.

What’s new in iOS 26.5

Apple highlights three changes that users will notice once they install the update, and each one targets a different part of the iPhone experience.

  • End to end encrypted RCS messaging (beta)
Messages sent between iPhone and Android devices now gain an extra layer of security when carriers support it, and this ensures that conversations stay private while they move between devices, which addresses a long standing gap in cross platform messaging.
  • Suggested Places in Apple Maps
Maps now shows recommendations based on what is trending nearby and your recent searches, and this section sits at the top of results to help users quickly find popular locations without typing detailed queries.
  • Pride Luminance wallpaper
Apple adds a new dynamic wallpaper that reflects a spectrum of colors, and the design changes slightly as you interact with the device, which ties in with the company’s annual Pride collection.

RCS encryption finally moves forward

iOS 26.5 Beta Restores RCS End-to-End Encryption on iPhone

Apple tested encrypted RCS earlier in the iOS 26.4 beta but did not ship it in the final version, and now the feature returns in iOS 26.5 with a clear plan to roll it out gradually through supported carriers, which means not every user will see it immediately.

This change matters because standard RCS lacked full end to end encryption, and now iPhone users get a more secure messaging experience when texting Android users, which closes a gap that many users have pointed out for years.

Maps prepares for ads, but rollout comes later

Apple is also laying the groundwork for ads inside Apple Maps, although iOS 26.5 itself does not switch them on automatically, and the company plans to launch this system later in the summer in the United States and Canada.

The Suggested Places section connects directly to this plan, since businesses will be able to appear at the top of search results and within these recommendations, and Apple says ads will carry clear labels and will not link personal location data to user accounts.

Small update with a clear direction

iOS 26.5 does not change the overall look or behavior of the system in a major way, but it sets up larger shifts in messaging security and Maps discovery, while also adding seasonal elements like the Pride wallpaper.

Apple is expected to move its focus to iOS 27 soon, with more attention on Siri and Apple Intelligence, and this update works as a stable step before that next phase arrives.
