iOS 27 installs Monday, September 14 on an iPhone 11 or later, including the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), exactly as it did with iOS 26. Apple Intelligence is a separate, shorter list that starts at the iPhone 15 Pro, which means seven still-supported iPhone generations get the free update with none of the features built on it.
That gap is the most consequential thing about Monday’s release for anyone not buying new hardware this month, and Apple documents both lists clearly enough to lay them side by side.
Key facts: iOS 27 versus Apple Intelligence
| List | Oldest iPhone included | Apple’s source |
|---|---|---|
| iOS 27 compatibility | iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation) | apple.com/ios/ verbatim device list |
| Apple Intelligence base tier | iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max only from the 2023 line | apple.com/apple-intelligence/ |
| Apple Intelligence, 2024 line | All iPhone 16 models, including 16e | apple.com/apple-intelligence/ |
| Advanced on-device tier | iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air and newer | apple.com/apple-intelligence/ footnotes |
Notice the gap inside the iPhone 15 generation itself. Apple’s Apple Intelligence device list names iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, but not the standard iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus. Both launched after Apple Intelligence existed, and neither is on the list Apple publishes today.

The three hardware tiers inside Apple Intelligence
| Tier | What it unlocks | iPhone floor |
|---|---|---|
| Base Apple Intelligence | Siri AI, Image Playground, Genmoji, Writing Tools, Photos AI tools | iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model |
| Advanced on-device model | Siri voice customization (pitch, speed, tone, accent), improved on-device Dictation | iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, Air, 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, Duo |
| Audio Intelligence (Apple Watch) | Live Rewind and Siri Recap, beta later in 2026 | iPhone 16 or newer, plus Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4 |
Apple has never quantified the daily usage limits it applies to server-side features such as Siri AI and Image Playground, and one footnote on the same page states plainly that expanded access to those features will be available for a fee in the future. No price or date accompanies that line.
What an iPhone 11 to iPhone 14 still gets Monday
Apple’s iOS 27 page separates its material into sections, and only two of them, Siri AI and Apple Intelligence in apps, carry the device restriction above. Everything Apple files under general OS improvements applies to any iPhone that installs iOS 27, including a Liquid Glass redesign with a new tint slider, sharper app icons, an optimized CPU scheduler, and Apple’s measured claims of app launches up to 30 percent faster and AirDrop up to 80 percent faster, tested on an iPhone 11 Pro Max among other devices. Communication Safety’s expanded gore and violence detection, Apple Pay checkout changes, Wallet passes from physical cards, and the Wi-Fi Assist rename to Connectivity Assist also carry no Apple Intelligence device requirement in Apple’s published material.
What stays out of reach
Siri AI, Visual Intelligence, Write with Siri, Image Playground, Genmoji, and the Photos tools Apple groups under Apple Intelligence in apps (Spatial Reframing, Extend, the enhanced Clean Up tool) all require a device from the base tier or higher. An iPhone 11 through 14, and a standard iPhone 15 or 15 Plus, runs iOS 27 in full but never sees a Siri AI prompt or an Image Playground icon, because the hardware is not on Apple’s list.
What Apple has not said
- Whether the standard iPhone 15 or 15 Plus will ever be added to the Apple Intelligence list. Apple’s current page excludes both.
- Any per-feature breakdown for the general OS improvements beyond what iOS 27’s page groups by section.
- An exact figure for the daily usage limits on Siri AI, Image Playground or the AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts.
- A price or date for the paid Apple Intelligence tier its own footnote confirms is coming.
iOS 27 becomes available as a free update starting Monday, September 14, 2026, for every iPhone on Apple’s compatibility list regardless of which Apple Intelligence tier, if any, that device reaches.
