iOS 27 Without Apple Intelligence: What Still Arrives on Every Eligible iPhone Monday

Every iPhone from iPhone 11 through iPhone 14, in every variant, plus every generation of iPhone SE, installs iOS 27 on Monday without ever qualifying for Apple Intelligence. That is not a small consolation update. Apple’s own pages describe a full design change, a new accessibility set and a run of app features that do not appear anywhere on the Apple Intelligence device list.

Here is the split Apple has actually published: what needs an Apple Intelligence device, and what ships to every phone on the iOS 27 list regardless.

What needs an Apple Intelligence device

Apple’s own pages keep a short, named list of features tied to that device requirement: Siri AI, Visual Intelligence, Write with Siri, Call Context and Image Playground. Apple names Image Playground directly, alongside Siri AI, as one of the features subject to daily usage limits because it relies on server-side models. All of them sit inside the Apple Intelligence sections of Apple’s iOS 27 and iPhone 18 Pro pages, and Apple has not published a version of any of them for phones outside that device list.

  • Liquid Glass, with its new personalization slider and sharper app icons
  • Safari Tab Topics and Notify Me for price and restock changes
  • Custom EQ for AirPods
  • GymKit support directly on iPhone

The size of the gap this leaves

Apple’s own device lists put a specific shape on this. Every iPhone from iPhone 11 through iPhone 14, in every variant, plus iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus and three generations of iPhone SE, runs iOS 27 without a route to Apple Intelligence. That is a wider population than the phones Apple showcased with the feature at its September 9 event, and Apple has not published figures for how many active iPhones that actually covers.

The gap is uneven within a single generation, too. iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max sit inside Apple Intelligence’s device list, while the plain iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, sold the same day with the same iOS, sit outside it. Apple’s list draws that line by chip rather than by year, which is why the split does not move cleanly with a phone’s age alone.

What Apple has not said

  • No published estimate of how many active iPhones fall outside the Apple Intelligence device list
  • No statement on whether any of the general features quietly depend on Apple Intelligence in ways Apple has not flagged
  • No plan to bring Apple Intelligence to any iPhone on this list
  • No separate roadmap for the Siri these phones keep using instead

The split is set for Monday, September 14, when iOS 27 becomes available, and nothing Apple has published suggests it changes before then. Our iOS 27 release date coverage and A20 Pro chip explainer cover the hardware end of the same story.
