iOS 27 brings new Apple Intelligence upgrades, but some of its most advanced AI features will not work on the base iPhone 17 because Apple has set higher hardware limits for these tools.
The situation sounds familiar because Apple made a similar move in 2024, when iOS 18 brought Apple Intelligence only to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus missed out because they did not meet Apple’s memory requirements.
The main reason comes down to RAM, as the iPhone 17 reportedly has 8GB of memory, while the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air move up to 12GB.
These iOS 27 AI features require stronger hardware:
- More powerful on-device AI model: Apple’s upgraded local AI model needs more memory to process tasks directly on the device, so it only runs on higher-end iPhones.
- New Siri voice customization: Apple has also limited the new Siri AI voice feature to devices with more memory, which leaves the base iPhone 17 out.
Apple has applied similar rules to iPad and Mac, where these features require newer chips and at least 12GB of memory. That makes the cutoff clear across Apple’s product lineup.
For iPhone 17 buyers, the phone will still support many iOS 27 features, but Apple’s most advanced AI upgrades now sit behind the Pro and Air models.
