Apple’s iPhone 17 is on track to break a record that has stood since the iPhone 4 era, as current expectations suggest the standard model will remain Apple’s main flagship iPhone for around 18 months before the iPhone 18 arrives.
The iPhone 4 currently holds the record after launching on June 24, 2010, and remaining Apple’s newest flagship until the iPhone 4S arrived on October 14, 2011. That gave it a run of 477 days, or about 15.7 months, mainly because Apple shifted its launch schedule from summer to fall.
Apple has followed a much more predictable annual cycle since then, although a few models stayed on top longer because of unusual circumstances. The iPhone 11 Pro lasted about 13 months before the delayed iPhone 12 Pro arrived during the pandemic.

iPhone 17 could stay on top for around 18 months
The expected delay of the standard iPhone 18 until spring 2027 changes that pattern and gives the iPhone 17 a projected flagship run of roughly 550 days.

The situation also differs from the iPhone 4 era because Apple now sells separate Pro models, which are still expected to receive annual updates alongside its first folding iPhone.
If the current release schedule holds, the iPhone 17 will become Apple’s longest-running standard flagship iPhone and finally surpass a record that has remained untouched for more than 15 years.
