Apple’s iPhone 17e appears close to launch as inventory of the current iPhone 16e runs low. Retail employees report that stock has nearly dried out, which usually signals a new model is on the way. If this pattern holds, the iPhone 17e could become Apple’s first major hardware release of 2026. At the same time, the M3 iPad Air is also seeing shortages, suggesting Apple plans to refresh that lineup as well.
The iPhone 17e is expected to bring modest upgrades rather than a full redesign. Reports indicate Apple will replace the notch with a Dynamic Island cutout and introduce the new A19 chip.
However, the device will keep the same C1 5G modem found in the iPhone 16e. That means users should not expect major improvements in cellular connectivity. Apple seems focused on internal refinements while keeping manufacturing costs under control.
Mark Gurman shared details about the situation on a X post.
“Apple retail employees say that inventory of the iPhone 16e has basically dried out and the iPad Air is seeing shortages as well. I’ve been expecting new versions of both (iPhone 17e and M4 iPad Air) in the coming weeks.”
If Apple follows its usual strategy for minor updates, it may announce the iPhone 17e through a press release instead of a full launch event. Since the design remains largely unchanged, a quiet rollout makes sense. The same approach likely applies to the M4 iPad Air, which reportedly keeps its existing design while gaining a faster chip.
M4 iPad Air Refresh Also Near
The iPad Air appears set for an internal upgrade from the M3 to the M4 chip. Like the iPhone 17e, it focuses on performance improvements rather than visual changes. This strategy simplifies logistics because Apple can reuse many components from the previous generation.
As for production, BOE, the OLED supplier for the iPhone 17e, has reportedly shipped around 8 million panels. While that number does not match flagship volumes, it supports a steady first-quarter rollout in 2026.
With inventory thinning and supply chains moving, Apple’s next product wave looks imminent.
