Apple opened pre-orders for AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 on September 9 without publishing an hour. The iPhone 18 Pro gets the opposite treatment: a named minute on every storefront, 5 a.m. PT today, and a buy page that has been sitting in get-ready mode since Tuesday.
All four products reach stores on the same day, Friday September 18. The difference is only in how Apple opened the ordering, and it is the reason iPhone preparation looks like an event while Watch and AirPods preparation looks like shopping.
Key facts on the two kinds of pre-order
| Product | Pre-orders opened | Published start time | In stores |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max | Saturday, September 12 | 5 a.m. PT, converted per storefront | Friday, September 18 |
| AirPods 5 | Tuesday, September 9 | None published | Friday, September 18 |
| Apple Watch Series 12 | Tuesday, September 9 | None published | Friday, September 18 |
| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Tuesday, September 9 | None published | Friday, September 18 |
| iPhone Duo | Friday, October 16 | 5 a.m. PT | Friday, October 23 |
The pattern is consistent: Apple times its iPhone pre-orders and does not time the rest. The Duo follows the iPhone convention with its own 5 a.m. PT start in October.

What Apple published for the untimed products
The Watch and AirPods releases use the phrase available to pre-order today and give availability as Friday, September 18, and the buy pages now read available starting 9.18. No hour appears in any of that wording, which is why nobody had to set an alarm on Tuesday.
Singapore is the exception worth knowing about. Apple’s Singapore release gives AirPods 5 pre-orders as beginning Friday, September 11 rather than September 9, the only date variation we found across the regional releases. Apple published no explanation and no time alongside it.
What Apple published for the timed one
For iPhone, the entire published instruction is one sentence on the buy page: choose your new iPhone today, then speed through checkout when pre-order starts at 5:00 a.m. PT on 9.12. Apple’s education storefront carries the identical sentence, so there is no separate education window, and the education price is the same as the consumer price.
Each regional store page converts that moment into its own clock, so the UK reads 1:00 pm BST, India 5:30 PM IST, Germany 14:00 MESZ, Japan 9 p.m., Singapore 8pm SGT and Australia 10:00 pm AEST. Apple Canada quotes 5:00 am PT to Canadian readers and the UAE says only 4:00 p.m. local time.
What a timed window actually changes about preparing
Very little of it is about speed, because Apple has documented no mechanism that rewards speed. What a clock does change is the value of deciding early, since the choices below are all published now and none of them needs to be made at the moment the store switches over.
- Model and size, at $1,199 for the 6.3-inch and $1,299 for the 6.9-inch in the US, both 256GB
- Storage, from 256GB up to the new 2TB tier at $2,399 and $2,499
- Finish, from Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy
- Connectivity, because the US starting prices assume a carrier is selected at checkout and buying unlocked costs $100 more
- Payment route, whether that is paying outright, Apple Card Monthly Installments over 24 months, or the Apple Upgrade lease from $34.99 a month
- Trade-in, where Apple’s published US range is $175 to $885 in instant credit for an iPhone 13 or later
Accessories are the one part that can genuinely wait, and Apple has already priced them, so there is no reason to spend any of the opening minutes on a case.
| Accessory | US price Apple publishes |
|---|---|
| Wrist strap | $29 |
| Clear Case with MagSafe | $49 |
| Silicone Case with MagSafe | $49 |
| TechWoven Case with MagSafe | $59 |
| FineWoven Wallet | $59 |
| Crossbody strap | $59 |
What Apple has not said
Apple has published no queue or waiting-room mechanism for any of these pre-orders, no feature it calls Express checkout, no statement that a saved bag or configuration carries into the pre-order, no requirement to be signed in beforehand, and no statement of when a card is authorised rather than charged. It gives no per-SKU delivery estimate, only the generic line that delivery estimates are based on item availability and the shipping option chosen, with a final date after an order is placed.
The routine that circulates every year, saving a configuration the night before and tapping through at the hour, comes from Apple’s user forums rather than Apple documentation, so we do not present it as Apple guidance. Apple’s retail sales policies are the closest published mechanics, and they say Apple may refuse or cancel any order or limit order quantity, and that an order confirmation email is not acceptance of an order.
iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT today, September 12. AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and both iPhone 18 Pro models reach stores on Friday, September 18, and the iPhone Duo takes its turn on the clock at 5 a.m. PT on Friday, October 16.
