The count matters because it is the kind of number a reader can check against Apple’s own pages today, more than five weeks before the phone exists in anyone’s hands, and right now those pages do not agree.

The number on iPhone Duo’s own page
Apple’s September 9 press release for iPhone Duo states plainly that the device supports Apple Intelligence in 15 languages, alongside a separate note that Siri AI ships as a beta in English first, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following in October. The release does not list which 15 languages it means, and it does not explain why the figure differs from Apple’s other pages.

The number everywhere else
Every other Apple page describing Apple Intelligence for iOS 27, the general Apple Intelligence page, the iOS 27 page, and Apple’s June 8 announcement of the feature, states 16 languages and lists them by name: English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Apple’s own wording treats Simplified and Traditional Chinese as two separate entries in that count, which is part of how the total reaches 16 rather than 15.
What the missing language might be
Apple has not said which language its iPhone Duo release leaves out, and nothing in what Apple has published points to a specific answer. It could be a simple editing gap in one press release rather than a real limit on the device, since Apple names no device-specific language restriction anywhere else for iPhone Duo, and lists the phone among Apple Intelligence-enabled devices without qualification elsewhere. Until Apple corrects one of the two figures, both stand as published.
Unlike a fold-cycle rating or a battery cell capacity, a language count is not a hardware secret Apple is holding back for launch day. What Apple has not said
Apple has not explained the gap between 15 and 16, has not named which language iPhone Duo’s release omits if the smaller number is deliberate, and has not corrected either page since both were published.
