Apple’s Product Environmental Report for iPhone Duo gives the foldable a carbon footprint of 93 kg of gross greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) for the 256GB model. Apple’s report for iPhone 18 Pro puts the same storage tier at 63 kg, so the Duo starts 30 kg higher before any storage upgrade.

Both reports carry a “date introduced” of September 9, 2026, and both are based on the U.S. configuration, with in-box accessories and packaging included in the total. If you are deciding between the two phones and carbon is part of the decision, the useful part is where those extra kilograms sit.
Where the extra 30 kg comes from
Apple splits each total into life cycle phases. Here is how the two 256GB models compare, copied from each report:

| Phase | iPhone Duo (256GB) | iPhone 18 Pro (256GB) |
|---|---|---|
| Production | 75 kg | 46 kg |
| Non-electricity (e.g., materials and process) | 27 kg | 17 kg |
| Electricity | 47 kg | 29 kg |
| Infrastructure for renewable energy generation | 2 kg | 1 kg |
| Transportation | 3 kg | 3 kg |
| Customer product use | 13 kg | 13 kg |
| End-of-life processing | under 1 kg | under 1 kg |
| Total | 93 kg | 63 kg |
Transportation, customer use and end-of-life processing are identical on both phones. The whole difference is in production, and the single biggest line is manufacturing electricity: 47 kg for iPhone Duo against 29 kg for iPhone 18 Pro.
That gap exists even though the Duo’s supply chain runs on a higher share of renewable power. Apple says 60 percent of manufacturing electricity for iPhone Duo was sourced from renewable energy, against 50 percent for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple does not break down which Duo components draw the extra electricity, so we will not guess at it.
Note that Apple rounds each phase, so the rows do not always add up exactly to the printed total. The totals above are the figures Apple prints.

Storage tiers widen the spread
Both reports list a footprint for every storage configuration. Apple says it models different configurations “to show the potential range of carbon emissions.”
| Storage | iPhone Duo | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB | 93 kg | 63 kg | 69 kg |
| 512GB | 103 kg | 72 kg | 79 kg |
| 1TB | 111 kg | 81 kg | 87 kg |
| 2TB | 138 kg | 109 kg | 114 kg |
The step from 1TB to 2TB costs 27 kg on iPhone Duo and 28 kg on iPhone 18 Pro, a bigger jump than any other storage step on either phone. A 2TB iPhone Duo, at 138 kg, sits at more than twice the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro figure.
We covered how storage drives the iPhone 18 Pro numbers in our earlier look at the 256GB to 2TB range. The Duo follows the same pattern from a higher starting point.
What Apple’s method counts
Apple says it calculates these figures under ISO 14040, ISO 14044 and ISO 14067, using IPCC AR6 100-year global warming potentials. The reports define each phase this way:
- Production: the extraction, processing and transportation of raw materials, plus the manufacture, transport and assembly of all parts and product packaging.
- Transport: ground, air and sea transportation of the finished product and its packaging from the manufacturing site to regional hubs and customers.
- Use: three years of use time for iPhone, based on use patterns of historically similar products, with regional differences in power grid mix accounted for.
- End-of-life processing: transportation from collection hubs to recycling centers and the energy used in mechanical separation and shredding of parts.
The 13 kg use figure therefore reflects Apple’s three-year assumption, not your own charging habits. Keep a phone longer and the production figure is spread over more years. Apple also states there is “inherent uncertainty in modeling carbon emissions due primarily to data limitations.”
Materials and efficiency
On recycled content, the two phones are close. Apple lists 35 percent recycled content for iPhone Duo and 40 percent for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The Duo’s enclosure uses 85 percent recycled titanium, and its 3D printed hinge cover uses 100 percent recycled titanium. iPhone 18 Pro uses 85 percent recycled aluminum in its enclosure.
Both phones have 100 percent recycled cobalt and 95 percent recycled lithium in the battery. Apple says iPhone Duo uses 50 percent less than the energy efficiency standard, while iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max use 60 percent less. Both measures refer to the 20W USB-C Power Adapter under U.S. Department of Energy battery charger standards.
The takeaway for buyers
If the lowest footprint matters most, the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro at 63 kg is the smallest number across both reports. If you want the foldable, the 256GB iPhone Duo at 93 kg comes in below a 2TB iPhone 18 Pro at 109 kg. Picking the storage you need does as much as picking the phone.
