Apple’s long-term plans for Vision products have reportedly changed significantly, with a new update suggesting the company is narrowing its focus to just two smart glasses projects. The latest roadmap update comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who now says Apple has dropped several previously rumored Vision devices from active development.
Apple Now Focused on Two Smart Glasses Products
Last year, Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple had seven head-mounted wearable products in development. Since then, the M5-powered Vision Pro has reached the market, but the rest of the lineup appears to have changed dramatically.
Ming-Chi Kuo now says only two products remain on Apple’s active roadmap. The first is a display-free AI smart glasses product that remains on track for a 2027 launch. The second is a more advanced AR/XR smart glasses device equipped with displays and powered by optical waveguide technology, although that product has reportedly slipped to 2029.
Ming-Chi Kuo shared the update in a post on X, where he stated that the major overhaul of Apple’s Vision roadmap was approved by John Ternus, who he describes as Apple’s next CEO. According to Kuo, Apple made the decision some time ago as the company shifted resources toward smart glasses that offer stronger mass-market appeal.
Questions Remain About Vision Pro’s Future
The updated roadmap notably removes any Vision Pro successor from Apple’s visible plans. However, that report conflicts with recent comments from Mark Gurman, who recently said Apple is working on a lighter and slimmer headset that would eventually succeed the $3,499 Vision Pro.
Mark Gurman expects that device to arrive in 2028 or 2029, which suggests Apple’s plans could still be evolving behind the scenes. For now, Apple’s reported focus appears to be on smart glasses as it looks beyond the current Vision Pro generation.
More details about Apple’s vision for spatial computing could emerge during WWDC, where the company is expected to introduce new visionOS updates and discuss the future direction of its Vision platform.
