Leak Hints at C1 Modem for iPhone 17e and iPhone 18 Pro

Leak Hints at C1 Modem for iPhone 17e and iPhone 18 Pro

Apple’s internal software points to a shift in modem strategy for its upcoming iPhones. The code suggests the iPhone 17e will rely on Apple’s first-generation C1-series cellular modem. At the same time, Apple appears undecided about which modem will power the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

What the leaked code shows

These details surfaced inside a Kernel Debug Kit for macOS that Apple briefly released and later removed. Inside the files, Apple listed hardware configurations tied to future iPhone models. The entries focus on cellular basebands and wireless chips.

For the iPhone 17e, the code references support for either the C1 or C1X modem. Notably, it leaves out Apple’s N1 wireless chip. That absence matters because without N1, the phone may miss features like Thread support, even with an Apple-designed modem.

The Information reports that Apple plans to ship the iPhone 17e with the C1X modem. This step would build on the C1 modem Apple introduced with the iPhone 16e. The report also reinforces the idea that Apple is testing how far its in-house modem technology can go in lower-cost models.

iPhone 18 Pro still in flux

The same internal code paints an uncertain picture for the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple listed both C1X and C2 modems across different configurations. That detail suggests Apple had not finalized the baseband choice. Unlike the 17e, the Pro models still show support for the N1 wireless chip.

These plans may change. Apple often tests multiple hardware paths before launch. Current expectations point to the iPhone 17e arriving in spring 2026, followed by the iPhone 18 Pro models in the fall.
